Stone age men

The classic vision of how men got their violence comes from 2001 A Space Odyssey, where Moonwatcher, whose community successfully fought off rivals at a watering hole, throws a bone into the sky as celebration and that results in one of cinema’s most famous match cuts. The bone represents violence and attempts to explain that evolution was inspired by alien intelligence. In truth its more likely such a simple step had been quite accidental, such as a hominid trying to deflect another aggressive hominid, before seeing a pile of bones as potential defence.

This Twitter/X post brought upon two videos published a month earlier. The AI videos are excellent in summarising how men basically evolved into a violent species. The nature of war morphed during the late medieval period when guns first arose. Prior to that weaponry such as cannon had been quite cumbersome, often needing several men to use. The handgonne (hand cannon) was the precursor for the earliest rifles.

The ‘art’ of war thus changed considerably and there’s been no looking back in how men conducted war. Its an insensibility that’s continued to this day. Doubtless men pride their knowledge and ingenuity in the development of weaponry, but its clear a considerable element of stupidity has also been involved.
